An Inaugural Chapter in Modernism Week

The La Quinta Country Club Home Tour marks the first-ever curated home tour within The La Quinta Country Club as part of Modernism Week, introducing a new annual program dedicated to architectural access, cultural stewardship, and thoughtful hospitality.

Conceived as both a debut and a foundation, the tour opens the doors to privately held modernist residences that have long shaped La Quinta’s architectural identity but have rarely—if ever—been experienced by the public.

"When visitors enter these homes, they encounter decisions made by renowned architects about materials, light, and landscape that express a particular way of life. The tour is designed to be both educational and enjoyable. I hope that guests leave with an appreciation for preservation and the instincts to support thoughtful stewardship."
– Robert Andrew Millar

About the Organizer

Robert Andrew Millar is the founder of Robert Andrew Millar & Associates and a longtime member of The La Quinta Country Club. His role as organizer reflects a deep commitment to preservation, cultural advocacy, and thoughtful access. With decades of experience in real estate, law, and complex negotiations, Millar brings a rare blend of professional rigor and personal passion to the program. His approach is rooted in stewardship—connecting private homeowners with a global audience while honoring the responsibility that comes with preserving historically significant spaces. Rather than positioning the tour as a spectacle, Millar frames it as an act of hospitality: an opportunity to share knowledge, spark appreciation, and encourage long-term preservation.

Architectural & Cultural Significance

La Quinta’s mid-century homes represent a distinct chapter in desert modernism—one shaped by resort living, indoor-outdoor flow, and an evolving understanding of climate-responsive design. The residences featured throughout the tour reflect the influence of architects such as William Cody and A. Quincy Jones, whose work helped define Southern California modernism beyond Palm Springs. These homes demonstrate how modernist principles adapted to leisure, landscape, and community life. Through guided tours and expert insight, the program highlights materials, structure, spatial planning, and the subtle design decisions that continue to inform contemporary architecture.

Why La Quinta Matters in the Modernism Canon

While Palm Springs often dominates the modernism narrative, La Quinta offers a complementary perspective—one rooted in privacy, retreat, and long-term stewardship. The La Quinta Country Club served as a cornerstone for estate development during the mid-20th century, attracting discerning patrons who valued architecture as an extension of lifestyle. The neighborhoods surrounding the club illustrate how modernism evolved across the Coachella Valley, responding to both social and environmental conditions. This program invites guests to consider La Quinta not as an offshoot, but as an essential contributor to the region’s architectural legacy.
